CALIGULA - Rubenesque (1994)

Caligula were a band from Sydney, Australia, who produced techno-grunge music in the early 1990s similar to DEF FX and achieved some national success. Caligula composed of five members: vocalist Ashley Rothschild, guitarists James McKinnon, drummer Dave Macken, Jamie Fonti (keyboards and backing singer), and bass guitarist Sean Fonti. The band also included Mitchell Foley at one stage. In 1994, they released this album Rubenesque which received national airplay on Triple J and Triple M with the songs "Tears of a Clown" (a remake of the Smokey Robinson & the Miracles song), "Before" and "Roundabout".

Band also got the Depeche Mode support. Actually got special guest status, in Brisbane they got to play most of Rubenesque. (10 tracks) through DM's awesome sound system. Absolutely brilliant, I'd never heard them before, I bought the album the next day on the strength of that performance, saw them a couple of times afterwards too.
